I’ve such a weak spot for rustic garden decorations with untreated wood. Every time when we cut a tree or get logs for our firewood, I want to get creative with it. Since I was just repotting some plants, the latest batch of logs came in handy. I made a wood log planter and I’m going to show you how I did it. 🙂
How to make a wood log planter
The best log was soon singled out. At first it was important to roll it around and find the most stable position for the log. I used a pencil to roughly mark the area, where I wanted the opening to be. Now it was time to carve out the wood.
Professional wood carvers, please look away now! I wanted to make work easier for me and used a big wood drill to make a lot of holes. To stabilize the log I put it on a wooden palette (it fit snugly in the gaps) and put my foot on it while I was drilling.
It worked out perfectly! The biggest challenge here is, not to chip off the bark where you don’t want to.
After the wood drill did it’s job, I removed the remaining bridges with a hammer and a chisel.
Smoothing out the edges takes up the most time. But since the planter will be filled with earth anyway, It needn’t be too perfect. All in all I was done in under half an hour.
Now to the planting! I chose succulents and housleeks because I just LOVE them! Seriously, I could fill the whole garden with those plants.
